Our approach to the environment

Care for wild places, the sea and the resources we use shapes how we design systems, carry out work and run our business.

A personal commitment

“I care deeply about the environment and have a particular love for wild places and the sea. As a Channel swimmer, I have a personal connection with our coastal waters. Protecting these places matters to me, and I want that care to be reflected in the everyday decisions we make at Energy Design.”Martin Johnson CEng · Managing Director

What this means in our work

Our environmental policy applies to our office, vehicles and customer sites, including subcontractors working under our control. We aim to prevent pollution, reduce waste and use energy and natural resources responsibly.

  • Thoughtful engineering. We consider energy demand, efficiency, equipment life, maintainability and repairability when designing systems and selecting products. Durable equipment and appropriate manufacturer support matter alongside performance.
  • Less waste and responsible recycling. We prioritise preventing waste, then reuse and recycling. Electrical waste is handled through authorised arrangements, including our account with Edmundson Electrical, which can provide itemised disposal records. End-of-life solar panels are kept separate for appropriate WEEE collection and recycling; large batteries are transported by specialist carriers.
  • Care at customer sites. We plan storage and handling of batteries, oils, chemicals and lamps to prevent pollution of land, drains and watercourses. We also consider noise, dust, packaging and surplus materials when planning work.
  • Practical changes to our own operations. We operate an electric vehicle, plan journeys efficiently and use remote meetings where suitable. We aim for a paperless office, keeping documents electronic wherever practicable and printing only when needed.

Supporting UK land and habitats

Our UK Land Stewardship Contribution supports direct ecological restoration and long-term care of wild land through established conservation partners. The primary focus is UK peatland restoration, alongside native woodland and habitat recovery, Scottish wild land stewardship, and coastal and marine clean-up initiatives.

A fixed percentage or project-based contribution is allocated from each applicable project to UK land-restoration programmes. Where relevant, this is identified on project documentation or invoices as a “UK Land Stewardship Contribution” or an “Environmental Restoration Contribution”.

We do not claim to be carbon neutral, do not support carbon trading and do not participate in carbon-offset schemes. These contributions support direct UK ecological restoration and land stewardship. They are not used to claim that the environmental impact of our work has been cancelled out.

Keeping our commitments practical

We review our environmental policy at least annually and sooner when material changes require it. Waste and recycling records, vehicle use, paper consumption and any environmental incidents help us identify where working practices can improve.

Our approach is set out in Energy Design Limited’s Environmental Policy, revision 1.7, dated 25 July 2026. Please contact us if you would like a copy or want to discuss environmental considerations for your project.
